Surveys genres of American Folklore emphasizing folk narratives and genres found in literature. These forms will be examined from multiple perspectives, including anthropology, sociology, folklore, and literature. In addition to surveying the folk traditions of the United States, the course surveys the theories that folklorists have developed to explain the continuation of such traditions in a society that is highly literate. Materials are drawn from student experience, literature, and collections of folklore and material culture. This course meets General Education requirements: Cultural Enrichment. Prerequisites: Honors Status. Typically Offered Spring only.
