3 Semester Hours. (Also listed as RE 421.) This course explores the relationships between art and religion bringing theories of religious and aesthetic experience together. It gives an overview of the history of sacred art worldwide and it introduces students to religious functions of contemporary art. The course concentrates on the ways in which sacred and spiritual beliefs influence the creation of works of art using various cultures from around the world and throughout history. Students learn to understand aesthetic experiences with critical reflection and explain it to others.
