4 sem. hrs. For first-year students. Involves two central goals that are mutually reinforcing: to teach critical thinking and writing and to address the challenges and opportunities of living in a multiracial and multicultural society. Focuses on development of student papers, from first draft through revisions and editing. Bases writing on personal experience as well as analysis of texts from a variety of disciplines. Includes a service-learning component in some sections. Section topics from 2007 ? C2008 included "Questions of Social Justice," "PoliticsProtests and Music," "Race, Gender, and theMedia," "Questions of Value, Happiness andGood Life," "Racial Makeovers," "GlobWomen/Our Common History." Honors sections are designated as HON. Some sections may be taught as learning communities. Faculty from across the College teach in this program.
