Credit 12 This 12-week clerkship provides students with opportunities to acquire basic skills necessary for the evaluation of surgical patients. Students participate in the management of surgical patients including pre-operative preparation, surgical assistance and postoperative care. Emphasis is on gaining an understanding of indications for specific surgical interventions, proper operating room procedures, surgical complications, follow-up care and interactions between different medical and surgical specialists. Students gain experience with diverse patients in the areas of general surgery, and subspecialties may be integrated into the clerkship, as follows: a) six-weeks of general surgery and b) six-weeks of subspecialties (three, two-week blocks or two, three-week blocks).
