An introduction to the methods and materials of historical study, as well as a survey of the repertoire, styles, genres, performance practices, and cultural contexts of Western art music from the Middle Ages to c. 1750. Coursework will consist of class discussion, listening, small research projects and assignments, and one term paper on a topic of the student's choice (with approval of the instructor). Much emphasis will be placed on written communication skills. Credits: 3
