An in-depth study of vocal and instrumental music from c.1600 to the mid-Eighteenth century, with special emphasis on the evolution of new forms. Students will be encouraged to increase their familiarity with repertoire, style, genres, performance practices, analytical methods, and cultural contexts through various small, independent research projects and presentations, as assigned by the instructor. A larger term project may be an option. Students will be expected to participate regularly in class discussions, analyses, and responses to class presentations. Reading, writing, verbal presentation, and critical skills emphasized. Credits: 3
