3 credits Explores the interactions among modernizing Great Britain and its quite different imperial ventures in India and South Africa from the eighteenth through the later twentieth centuries. The motives and impact of the British in each colony will be sought, along with patterns of cultural resistance and struggles for liberation within the indigenous peoples and the emergence of postcolonial conditions and perspectives. Course materials will range across primary and secondary sources, fiction, and films. Note: By permission of instructor.
