3 credits This course, set in the nineteenth through the early twenty-first centuries, focuses on the complicated transitions from colony to apartheid state to democratic republic that form the broad shape of modern South African history. Considerable attention will be given to historiographical issues, especially the consequences of the shift from colonial to post-colonial perception. Course materials will range across primary and secondary sources, fiction, and films. Prerequisite: 3 credits of CHIST or CHUMS at the 3000-level OR permission of the instructor.
