Introduction to fiber optics; components, concepts, and systems design techniques required for planning, design, and installation of fiber-optic communication systems. Single- and multimode LED and semiconductor lasers, detectors, connectors and splicers, terminal and repeater electronics, wavelength division multiplexing optical amplifiers and solitons, and systems architecture for point-to-point and local area networks. Laboratory work on fiber and electronic measurements. 4 cr.
