In the first year, in tandem with Foundation Studies: History of Art + Visual Culture (2 semesters) English Composition and Literature (fall semester) In addition, over four years: The equivalent of at least one liberal arts course a semester from more than 200 offerings in everything from literature to philosophy to mathematics and the social sciences. Concentration in the History of Art + Visual Culture This program takes advantage of RISD's rich, diverse art history curriculum and the resources of the RISD Museum and library. Students choose from courses in artistic traditions of the world, critical theory and visual culture, art historiography, aesthetics and histories of various media. Concentration in English: Literary Studies or Creative Writing Students who want to work with narrative and text in their visual art will find this concentration especially appealing. You can focus on developing integrative work in text and image or performance, investigating cultural and aesthetic concepts and issues or creating a body of work in fiction, poetry or nonfiction. Concentration in History, Philosophy + the Social Sciences Integrating many fields, this interdisciplinary concentration offers courses in anthropology, political science, psychology, sociology, history and philosophy. Focal areas are American Studies; Asian Studies; Belief Systems; Contemporary Issues and Public Policy; Culture, Race, and Ethnicity; European Studies; Gender and Sexuality; and Media Studies.
