The collapse of communism in the Soviet Union resulted in the creation of fifteen independent successor states. These states are undergoing profound economic, social, and political transformations. In this course, we will examine the formation, development, and dissolution of the Soviet regime and compare paths of evolution of the Newly Independent States formed upon its demise using Russia as the central focus of our comparisons.
