Originally hailed as a progressive social experiment in education, health care, women's rights, sports, and the work-place, the movement was later condemned for its fanaticism, violence, and vilification of intellectuals. Evaluates the complex issues and conflicting appraisals of the upheaval and assesses its impact on recent Chinese history.
