Readings and lectures in English. The course explores German Romanticism in literature, philosophy, and music. OneWagner opera; and the influence of Romanticism on German nationalism, Nietzsche, and Thomas Mann will also be discussed. Readings include Schlegel, Fichte, Heine, Kleist, women in Romanticism, E.T.A. Hoffmann, and Robert Schumann. Students must take German 340 instead, if majoring or minoring in German Studies. Offered in alternate years.
