Expands student's knowledge and skill development for service to people who come from diverse backgrounds. Diverse populations examined include, but are not limited to, those distinguished by race, ethnicity, culture, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability, age, socioeconomic divisions, or regional groups within the United States. Information on the similarities and differences in history, adaptive capabilities, strengths, beliefs, experiences, and needs of people from diverse groups will be shared. Concepts such as power differentials, discrimination, access to opportunities, and intergroup conflicts will be explored through the use of relevant theories, concepts and empirical studies. Students will increase self-awareness by investigating and illustrating how their individual values knowledge and skills will impact their ability to show respect for and understanding of the uniqueness of diverse populations.
