Description:

Investigation of Christian understandings of God and correlatively the human person as disclosed in Jesus-his ministry, death, resurrection and sending of the Spirit-and developed within the first five centuries of Christianity. Beginning with a study of the ministry and death-resurrection of Jesus from the perspectives of the synoptic gospels, the course then examines the paschal mystery of Jesus as revelatory experience of God as Self-Gift/Love or the Trinitarian Mystery. An investigation of how this experience of God was expressed in the gospels and writings of Paul and then later in the early Church Councils assists students in understanding how Christian understandings of faith grow and develop in changing situations and in different cultures. This study includes a reflective exploration of the human person, created in the image and likeness of God, as well as the challenges and possibilities of Christian discipleship in the third millennium. Prerequisite: Nine hours in religious studies. RELS 302 is recommended.
