An introduction to the history of African art. This course focuses on the sub- Saharan region of Africa and the study of traditional art forms from the major ethnic groups of the western and central areas. It includes painting, sculpture and architecture, as well as pottery, weaving, gold work and ivory carving. Emphasis is placed on the role and function of the visual arts in these African cultures. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing. This course is designated as fine arts division general education course.
