Introductory-level studio courses designed to develop basic concepts, techniques and processes in the use of clay. Includes coil building, slab building, use of the potter's wheel, surface decoration and glazing. Assignments explore functional, figurative and sculptural concepts. Students are encouraged to combine methods of building and begin developing a personal direction and a critical aesthetic through research and experimentation. Emphasis is also placed on ceramic history, glaze mixing and kiln firing. Ceramics I is designated as fine arts division general education course.
