Basic concepts for visualizing the behavior of nonlinear physical systems. Use of the computer as an exploratory tool for generating and observing transitions between periodic and chaotic behavior. The driven, damped pendulum as a model dynamical system for exploring such concepts as sensitivity to initial conditions, routes to chaos, strange attractors and fractal basin boundaries. Students are asked to extend general ideas to a specifi c physical system by performing a term project. (1017-317, 401) Class 4, Credit 4 ( offered upon suffi cient request) (F or W) 1017-440 Stellar Astrophysics A survey of basic concepts of the astrophysics of stars and stellar systems. Observed characteristics of stars, stellar atmospheres, stellar structure, stellar evolution, interstellar medium, and the Milky Way. (1017-301 or permission of instructor, 1017-314) Class 4, Credit 4 (offered upon suffi cient request) (W)
