Students will explore major ethical issues in medicine and biology via lecture, readings, fi lms, and presentation and discussion of cases. Students will also be encouraged to report on current events in ethics as researched via the library computer search facilities and the internet. The fi rst two weeks of the course will be lecture. Students will learn about various theories of ethical analysis that are in current use. Subsequent classes will be devoted to particular ethical areas. Relevant cases will be given to the students for presentation, any additional background material that may be required to discuss the cases will be presented by the instructor, and the remainder of the period will be taken up with discussion based on the philosophical foundation provided at the beginning of the course.
