Study of the techniques and applications of culturing eukaryotic cells, tissues and organs in vitro. Emphasis is on mammalian systems. Lectures will cover the historical background of tissue culture, how to authenticate cell lines, basic cell culture techniques as well as stem cells, tissue engineering, and the role of cell culture in regenerative medicine. In laboratory, students will be introduced to growth curves, cloning techniques, primary cell culture, making a cell line as well as detecting mycoplasma and other cell culture contaminants.
