The subject of this course is 15th century painting, sculpture and architecture in Florence and Rome. We will approach this material in a more or less chronological order as we focus upon a series of important commissions. Questions for consideration will include: the nature and meaning of the Italian Renaissance, developments in artistic theory and practice, the importance of Antique and Medieval precedents, the increasing attention to the effects of nature, the rising status of the artist, the role of the patron, and the relevance of documents, literary sources and visual precedents for our interpretation of images. Part of the history concentration and minor; the Italian language/ culture concentration and minor; and may also be taken as an elective. Crosslisted with CIAS.
