Examines the late-19th century emergence of the United States as an imperial power and its development into a twentieth-century superpower. Topics include American politics and foreign policy, the influence of racial and cultural ideologies on policy, isolation and intervention, the Cold War, and the Iraq wars. Required course for international studies majors. Part of the history and global studies concentrations; the history of the modern world minors; and may also be taken as an elective.
