This course provides a study of Johann Sebastian Bach, his life and times, and his music in the context of Baroque styles and aesthetics. Compositions from each of the major periods of his creative life are examined and discussed, particularly as they serve the social and religious purposes for which they were written, and as they reveal the psychology of so called "Rhineland mysticism."Part of the German language/culture concentration and minor; the music concentration and minor; and may also be taken as an elective.
