Description:

This course will focus upon Italian artists working in Rome from circa 1590 to circa 1660. Although we will explore painting, sculpture, and architecture in this sequence and more or less chronologically, we will often have the chance to consider how these different media coalesce to create an overwhelming visual experience. We will pay particular attention to major commissions given to Annibale Carracci, Michelangelo da Caravaggio, Gianlorenzo Bernini, and Francesco Borromini, as we seek to defi ne the nature and meaning of the Roman Baroque.
