A critical study of the art and visual culture of the fi rst fi ve decades of the twentieth century. Major stylistic movements in Europe and America will be examined with special attention to innovations in materials, subject, matter, and philosophy. Central themes include: the relationship between art and politics; abstraction vs. fi guration; primitivism and the search for origins; reactions to modernity and the rise of technology; the tension between the avant-garde and popular culture; the institutional critique, and the special role of art and artists in modern society.
