Provides the critical tools to quantitatively analyze uniprocessor computer performance. Instruction set architecture alternatives are described and examples are presented of each alternative, such as load-and-store, CISC, stack, etc. Techniques to enhance performance, such as pipelining, cache memory and memory hierarchy, are presented. The use of vector processing, such as is used in supercomputers, is described and analyzed. Finally, the impact of input/output on computer performance is described.
