A careful reading of selected plays. Emphasis is placed upon Shakespeare's uses of language for characterization and development of themes and issues. An important aspect of the course is an attempt to show Shakespeare's development as a dramatic artist in terms of major themes that inform his work from the early plays to the late romances, particularly The Winter's Tale and The Tempest.
