3 hours; 3 credits Critical examination of philosophical issues pertaining to music. Consideration of such issues as the definition or concept of music, the ontology of music, musical meaning and understanding, musical expressiveness and arousal, musical representation, musical performance and authenticity of performance, the power and value of music, and the aesthetics of jazz, rock, and popular music. Classical and contemporary philosophers. (This course is the same as Music 96.) Prerequisite: one course in Philosophy or Core Studies 10 or Core Curriculum 2.1 or one course in music, or permission of the chairperson of the offering department.
