4 hours; 4 credits History of theories of the underlying principles of law and social organization. Principles of just distribution; rule of men versus rule of law; natural law and social contract theories; social justice versus individual liberty. Such philosophers as Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Mill,Thoreau, Rawls, and Nozick are discussed. (Not open to students who have completed Philosophy 39.)
