3 hours; 3 credits An exploration of the major features of contemporary Italy from 1939 to the present with particular attention to developing an understanding of the concepts of cultural identity and difference within the changing European context. Discussions and frequent writing assignments using a variety of approaches and supplementary materials from the Italian print, broadcast, and electronic media. Field trips to museums and cultural events. May be taken concurrently with or after Italian 4.8, 11.1, or 11.12W. (Not open to students who have completed Italian 50.) Prerequisite: Italian 4 or 4.8 or permission of the chairperson.
