3 hours; 3 credits An introductory course designed to familiarize students with major literary works in French within a chronological and cultural framework. Representative texts from the French-speaking world, providing an overview of French and Francophone writings that have shaped the lives of generations of readers. Frequent writing assignments in French to strengthen students' individual competencies. This core of texts, reviewed periodically by the department, serves as a foundation for advanced literature courses. (Not open to students who have completed French 18.) Prerequisite: French 4 or 4.8 or permission of the chairperson.
