3 hours; 3 credits A historical overview of the values, institutions, and cultural heritage of France and other French-speaking European cultures from their origins to the mid-twentieth century. Discussions and frequent writing assignments using a variety of approaches and supplementary materials from the French print, broadcast, and electronic media. Field trips to museums and cultural events. May be taken concurrently with or after French 4.8 or 11.1. (Not open to students who have completed French 51.) Prerequisite: French 4 or 4.8 or permission of the chairperson.
