3 hours; 3 credits An exploration of the major features of contemporary French society and other French-speaking European cultures from 1945 to the present with particular attention to developing an understanding of the concepts of cultural identity and difference within the changing European context. Discussions and frequent writing assignments using a variety Modern Languages and Literatures 249 of approaches and supplementary materials from the French print, broadcast, and electronic media. Field trips to museums and cultural events. May be taken concurrently with or after French 4.8 or 11.1. (Not open to students who have completed French 51.) Prerequisite: French 4 or 4.8 or permission of the chairperson.
