3 hours; 3 credits An exploration of the contemporary French-speaking world outside of Europe from 1945 to the present with particular attention to developing an understanding of the concepts of cultural identity and difference, nationalism, and la francophonie. Discussions and frequent writing assignments using a variety of approaches and supplementary materials from the print, broadcast, and electronic media. Field trips to museums and cultural events. May be taken concurrently with or after French 4.8 or 11.1. Prerequisite: French 4 or 4.8 or permission of the chairperson.
