Comparative historical analysis of these movements, especially the development of leadership, organization, and ideology, and the interplay of violent and nonviolent techniques of struggle. Impact of World War II on European imperial rule in Asia and on nationalist movements. Independence in the postwar generation and consequences for the new nations. Extensive use of slides and films of both areas.
