Problems considered include: how earth study became scientific; the role of "fantastic" theoriesof the earth; the discovery of time; the nature of change; the meaning of fossils; the construction of modern geologic beliefs. Evaluation of different histories of geology. Prerequisite: Geology 2.2 or permission of the chairperson.
