This course explores the popularity and ideas of this genre as reflected in such writers as Irving, Hawthorne, Poe, Melville, James, Crane, Wharton, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Faulkner, Welty, Wright, Flannery O'Connor, Malamud, and Updike. Prerequisite: ENG 2150 or ENG/LTT 2800 or 2850 or departmental permission.
