3 hours; 3 credits The contradictory Assimilationist and Separatist movements that swept Black America during the fifties and sixties are analyzed from the historical, sociological, political, economic, and psychological points of view. Leaders, objectives, accomplishments, and landmark events in the opposing movements are contrasted throughout. Precisely how, and to what extent, the Black activism of that era has reverberated throughout the entire American society is also studied. Prerequisite: BLS 1002, BLS 1019, HIS 2060, or POL 1101, or departmental permission.
