Velazco The Chiapas rebellion of 1994 is a milestone in the history of indigenous resistance in the Americas, and a significant part of the growing international movement against global capitalism. Described as the world's first "post-communist rebellion," this armed movement hasraised key questions about the social and economic impact of Neoliberalism, the future of indigenous cultures, and the scope of democratization in Mexico. This seminar will examine recent literary texts (novels, political essays, chronicles, and communiqués) that provide the background and context for the Zapatista movement, and explore its impact in Mexico and internationally. Prerequisite: Spanish 100 or above, or permission of instructor. Offered every third year.
