This course examines correspondences and affinities between literature and film in aesthetic, cultural and social contexts. Throughout we will look not only at specific case studies of literary adaptation or cross-reference, but consider the larger questions of culture value implied in these transactions. Writers and filmmakers to be considered include Henry James, Virginia Woolf, Carson McCullers, Stephen King, Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, Roman Polanski, and Robert Altman.
