Mayes This course examines the social and political effects of racial and ethnic categorization for people of African descent in Latin America, with a particular focus on Cuba, Brazil, Colombia, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico. We will look at the social organization of difference from a theoretical and historical perspective as it relates to colonialism, economic systems of production, such as slavery, issues of citizenship, national belonging and government services, and access to resources.
