A. Bradley This course explores major figures and forms in black American poetry from the Harlem Renaissance to the present. Topics will include vernacular versus "standard"English; the influence of the blues, hip hop, and other black musical forms; poetry as protest; the spoken word movement; and the representation of racial identity in verse. Special consideration will be given to the poetry of Jean Toomer, Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, Lucille Clifton, Amiri Baraka, Rita Dove, Etheridge Knight, and Yusef Komunyakaa. Offered every other year.
