Designed for students with little or no music background, the course is an exploration of American popular music from early Rhythm and Blues and Country Western through Woodstock. Examines in detail the social/racial issues most important to the music and the cultural history of twentieth-century America. The course features online video lectures and numerous interviews with professors and scholars from other disciplines, presenting a perspective of the influence of this music on nearly every area of American life. Students are required to participate in online discussion groups as part of the class. Music majors may enroll for music elective credit. 3 hrs
