This course builds a knowledge base in developmental disabilities requisite to other studies in this field. Students will meet individuals with disabilities, encounter "people first" values, and examine their own attitudes about people with disabilities from a multicultural perspective. The course presents principles of human development, causes of disability, and the effects of disability on individuals and families over the life span. Topics include the health, education and social services systems serving people with disabilities with emphasis on severe disabilities and critical junctures in the life-span including childhood, school-age, transition to adult-living, employment, and aging. 4 hrs
