Narrative history concentrating on the explosive and colorful events and personalities in France, but also showing the European and Western context and impact of the revolution and Napoleon. Illustrated accounts cover such "great days" as the storming of the Bastille, the fall of Robespierre, and Napoleon's Coup of 18 Brumaire, and great battles. Main periods are: the origins of the revolution (economic, social, political, intellectual); revolution and reconstruction (1789-92); through terror to Thermidor (Jacobins and sans-culottes); Napoleon's wars and reconstruction (France and Europe).
