This course will survey European crime, criminal procedure, policing and punishment between 500 and 1900. Particular attention will be given to changing methods of proof (oaths, ordeals, juries); changing type of criminal activity (banditry, vagrancy, witchcraft, professional theft) and changing penal strategies (the stocks, breaking on the wheel, the workhouse, the prison, the penitentiary).
