This course surveys the political, economic, social, intellectual, and cultural history of Europe from about 1600 to the present, through these major developments in those centuries: the origins of the modern sovereign state (absolutist and constitutional), the English revolutions; the European Enlightenment, the French Revolution, and Napoleonic Europe; Romanticism and Scientism in culture and thought, the Industrial Revolution and urban society, and nationalism and imperialism; the two world wars, the Russian Revolution, dictators and totalitarian states, and the current postwar world and culture.
