This is a writing-intensive introduction to the history of modern computing. After an introduction to historical writing, the course surveys the history of electronic computing, covering both technological changes and their social and economic context. Student efforts then will be focused on individual research leading to the writing of a paper on a topic in this field selected with the approval of the instructor. Students will carry out a series of written assignments in order to learn how to do historical research and to improve one's reading, writing, and analytical skills.
