This course examines social and ethical issues raised by academic reading and writing. While some attention is paid to the formal aspects of academic prose within specific disciplines, the main emphasis of the course is on the cultural consequences of the different ways that academic knowledge is created and taught. In addition to studying the language and structure of academic reading and writing, the course explores the various rhetorics of the academy in terms of a broad range of subjects including economics, gender, education, history, and myth. This course satisfies the junior-level writing requirement and counts towards the writing minor. Prerequisites: ENGLISH 110, ENGLISH 225 and successful completion of the WEPT. Offered every semester. 3 hrs
