A survey of architecture and urbanism in the United States. We begin in the early years of the republic, but focus on the period from the Civil War to the present. Topics include the planning and development of major American cities, the creation of the skyscraper as a new commercial type, the evolution and design of the suburb, the emergence of the United States as the center of modernism following World War II and its displacement from that center with the pluralistic trends of the last three decades. Prerequisites: ART 254, ART 303 or instructor's permission. Offered: Fall. 3 hrs
